The Fractional Executive Market Is Going To Split In Two

Some companies will want access to a seasoned executive's expertise. Others will want an embedded operator who owns the outcome.

People who sell access to their expertise.

And people who take ownership of an outcome.

A lot of fractional work still looks like the first model. Bring in an experienced CFO, COO, CRO, CTO. They join a few meetings. Give advice. Solve some hard problems. Help the CEO think through decisions. Then move on to the next client.

There's real value in that. But it's still basically the executive version of a hired gun. You're buying access to experience.

I think there's another model emerging. One where the executive isn't brought in simply because the company needs some COO time or a few hours of CFO expertise.

They're brought in because something specific needs to change.

  • Revenue has stalled.
  • The operating model isn't scaling.
  • Finance, sales and operations aren't lining up.
  • A major transformation has to get across the finish line.
  • The company has outgrown its leadership structure, but isn't ready to build the next full executive team.

That requires something different from advice. It requires ownership. Get inside the business. Understand what is really happening. Make decisions. Bring the right functions together. Own the tradeoffs. Drive the work until the outcome is real.

And then, ideally, leave behind an organization that can carry it forward without you.

That's a very different product.

Which is why I think "fractional executive" currently describes the employment arrangement better than it describes what the client is actually buying.

The market is going to get more precise.

Some companies will want access to a seasoned executive's expertise.

Others will want an embedded operator who owns the outcome.

Neither is wrong. But they are not the same thing.

That distinction is a big part of why we built ExecPods the way we did.

Not as a collection of executive gunslingers. As coordinated executive coverage built around a business outcome.

When companies hire fractional leadership, do you think they're really buying expertise, execution, or ownership?
